Abstract

Mathematical anxiety is now a recognised and accepted psychological problem, however, there is still some controversy as to whether or not mathematical anxiety is a true form of anxiety or just an excuse for a decline in progress or results. My dissertation contains research that expands on the different effects of anxiety in higher ability students in secondary school as well as to investigate the possible contributing factors to the anxiety students may experience during mathematics. The research was conducted by using observations, questionnaires, interviews and administering a short test in two different controlled environments in order to find the effects of anxiety and the factors that contribute to the severity of anxiety experienced. Not only were several contributing factors found but also some factors, such as parental influence, were found to show inconsistent results that imply that they have little or no effect. The results highlight a possible need to raise awareness of anxiety in schools in order to better accommodate these students and to help them to continue to achieve and be successful in mathematics.
