Abstract

This independent project (IP) set out to gain the parents perceptions of healthy eating for children. I am working in an Early Year setting and healthy eating for children is very current in the media as childhood obesity rates are increasing.

I wanted to understand if the parents felt there were any challenges to providing their child with healthy meals and snacks and recognise whether they feel pressurised to provide this for their child. We will reflect on current practice in the setting to gain an understanding of the parent’s perceptions and improve practice if necessary.

To gain my data I conducted six interviews with parents of children attending the nursery where I work. The interviews included open-ended questions and were clear and easy to understand.

It is clear from the findings that the parents feel confident to provide healthy meals and snacks for their child and addressed little challenges. The participants really like the food the chef provides for the children and are happy with the variety of food that is offered.

Some of the participants recognised there was lack of partnership working between the setting and parents to promote healthy eating for children. Therefore this would be a recommendation for change to improve current practice.
