Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the impact of different contextual factors and there influence on student engagement levels during physical education. Building on previous research, this study aimed to implement systematic observation, interviews and questionnaires to provide a holistic view of how engagement levels are affected. Method: Three schools (n = 216 students) took part in the study. A total of 12 lessons were observed using the Academic Learning Time in Physical Education (ALT-PE) instrument as a means of measuring student engagement levels. Results were then statistically analysed and combined with findings from teacher interviews and the Teaching Behaviour Questionnaire (TBQ-S). Findings: Results from ALT-PE revealed that the greatest amount of time shown to be spent motor engaged was displayed during a female rugby lesson and time spent engaged at an appropriate level was highest during a single-sex gymnastics class. After visually exploring the data through line graphs, statistical analysis revealed that there was a significant association between a number of contextual factors. The impact of these factors produced a vast range of differences on student engagement levels. Conclusion: It was concluded that much of the results was in line with previous research, with games activities and single sex lesson producing the greatest amount of motor engaged activity. It is hoped this study will contribute to previous research, providing more depth and understanding into the factors affecting student engagement.
