Abstract

The purpose of this study was to enhance the performance of three youth midfield soccer players’ visual exploratory activity through the examination of the resultant behaviours carried out with or without a prior visual search. Initially, three 80 minute matches and one two hour training session were analysed per player using a player cam setup. Data was subdivided into three themes; maintained possession, defensive pressure and turning opportunity, alongside analysis into mean exploration and ball contact time. The data was analysed using SportsCode Elite software and results were delivered to the coach as an initial review of performance. The process was then repeated and a final review of results was presented to the coach. A statistical chi squared test displayed an association between visual exploratory activity and whether possession was maintained or not during matches (ꭓ²(1) = 25.511, p > 0.0), alongside similar findings between visual exploratory activity and pass directions (ꭓ²(2) = 8.878, p > 0.012). It was concluded that the type of defensive pressure had an impact on whether players visually scan the environment prior to receiving the ball. These results provide evidence suggesting that coaches should aim to develop visual exploratory activity prior to receiving the ball particularly within youth players as it is concluded perceptual skills must be developed at a young age to ensure elite advancement.
