Abstract
Athletes experience high pressure situations diverting attention focus away from the task ahead, hindering performance. Thought patterns can interfere with the execution of a skill, however, psychological interventions are often put in place to improve cognition and performance. Self-talk as a cognitive intervention has been found to be an effective strategy to enhance performance. However, the overtness dimension of self-talk is yet to be investigated in a sporting context. The present study focuses on the effects of overt and covert self-talk on the performance of basketball free throws. A quantitative research approach was adopted, including the use of a self-talk intervention strategy, with the use overt and covert self-talk. The participants were 15 female university level basketball players, split into three groups, overt self-talk, covert self-talk or a control group. A mixed between-with subjects ANOVA was conducted, finding no significant difference between groups. From the analysis of pre and post intervention scores findings suggest that there is no significant difference on free throw scores when performing self-talk either out loud or in the mind. Further research is required to determine the effects of the overtness dimension of self-talk on sports performance.
