Abstract

The research project aimed to investigate how far schools feel able to support transgender children, the barriers schools may face as well as highlight factors that would support them in doing this. Questionnaires were completed by school staff; teaching, non-teaching and senior leadership. Interviews were conducted with teaching staff and document analysis was carried out using the Anti-Bullying, Ethos and Culture, and Equality policies. The research found that there are a number of areas which could be developed in order for schools to feel confident supporting transgender children. The research concludes by discussing recommendations to enable schools to support transgender children in a confident, visible and inclusive manner.
