Abstract

This paper aims to study what kinds of factors would be important to influence the
capital structures of the firms in the UK market by using regression tests on the UK
market data. It applies 70 companies’ financial data for the period from 2010 to 2014,
and found that the profitability, board size, firm size, and business risk can be
considered as an important factor in impacting on the capital structure change based
on the UK market data. However, different from the previous academic studies, such
as studies done by Wen, et al (2002), this paper fails to find any relationship
between the outside directorship and the capital structure. In other words, the
outside directorship might not have any significant influence on the capital structure
of the firms, while previous studies suggest a negative relationship between the
outside directorship and the capital structure.
