Abstract

This study aimed to determine how Early Years professionals manage their own aversions to the risks associated with supporting children with physical disabilities in Adventurous Outdoor Play, primarily focused on children aged four to six. The study was divided into three sections, exploring the themes of “the benefits of outdoor play”, “risk aversion in society”, and “professionals ‘can-do’ attitude”. Subthemes of this research further evaluated whether physically disabled children gain the same benefits from Adventurous Outdoor Play as able-bodied children, whether Early Years professionals are more risk-averse towards physically disabled children, and how this can be overcome with a ‘can-do’ attitude. The research was conducted through interviews which proposed various different vignettes and were held with a number of Early Years professionals. Key factors in managing professionals’ risk aversions have been revealed to consist of training, qualifications, and the level of support provided by managers and colleagues. In order for children with physical disabilities to have equal opportunities to take part in Adventurous Outdoor Play we must ensure professionals are provided with the necessary training and qualifications to facilitate this. Children with physical disabilities have been found to not be any more affected by a “risk-averse” society than able-bodied children. It has also been discovered that parents of children with physical disabilities actively seek out opportunities for Adventurous Outdoor Play to ensure their children gain the associated developmental benefits.
